Reflecting on how COP29 affects the built environment industry

Over the past couple of weeks, global leaders have congregated in Baku, Azerbaijan for the annual Conference of Parties (COP). COP29 is a global summit where countries come together to negotiate and advance climate action, aiming to address climate change through international agreements and commitments.�

As we approach the end�of COP29, the urgent need for climate action is clearer than ever. This year, global temperatures are projected to exceed 1.5�C for the first time across a full calendar year, highlighting a big need for change.��

What does COP29 mean for our�industry?�

As a business operating�in the supply, distribution, and fabrication of wood veneer and decorative laminate panels, we know that every building material and design choice contributes to the environmental footprint of the UK built environment�sector.

The built environment sector is responsible for�nearly 40% of global carbon emissions, demonstrating�its importance in achieving global climate goals. However, it remains�alarmingly underrepresented in key discussions at COP29.�

Why is this critical now?�

With COP29 marking another�pivotal moment in the battle against climate change, it�s�time for governments and industries to�further invest in sustainable construction.�

As we reflect on the discussions at COP29, we want to highlight�our commitment to sustainability in every step of our supply chain.��

We have a newly formed�internal Carbon Reduction team that will focus on staying abreast of the latest sustainable innovations and implementing them into daily operations at See Limited�and our operating businesses Performance Panels Limited�and Bousfields. The team are Robert Thompson, Danielle Redgate,�Todd Leverton, Inga Gusauskaite, and Jayden Whitworth.�

As part of our sustainable work, we encourage others in our supply chain to reevaluate their sustainability initiatives and join us in working towards a more sustainable future and cleaner planet.�The built environment contributes to 25% of emissions in the UK�which is something we are aware we have the power to change.�

From responsible sourcing of material to energy-efficient operations, we are proud to be part of a growing movement in the built environment that�s�focused on taking sustainable steps forward to reduce carbon emissions.�
