Members of the See Limited team, along with two students on work experience, attended the University of Northampton’s sustainability summit on the 30th of June 2025, where we heard a range of talks from businesses attempting to be more sustainable in their actions.

This is a yearly summit where companies gather together to share their different sustainable strategies, hoping to give ideas to others who can then themselves become more eco-friendly.

The session commenced with a presentation from Stephane Bazire, the head of business sustainability at Silverstone who explained to us the improvements they have made to make their business more environmentally friendly and the changes they aim to make in the coming years.

The event featured speeches from Simon Derrick, the Sustainable Business Alliance founder who works with companies helping them to become more effective in reducing their contribution to climate change. As well as this, we heard from two business owners who presented direct examples about how they have been helping the environment whilst producing their products.

And finally, four businesses; Farrington Oils (https://www.farrington-oils.co.uk/), South Midlands Growth Hub (https://growthhub.southmidlands.org.uk/), and Cranfield Aerospace Solutions (https://cranfieldaerospace.com/) explained to us their clever strategies to use less carbon and plastic in their industries.

Sustainable strategies from local businesses

One sustainability action we found interesting was the ideas from the head of sustainability at Silverstone. Over the past years they have worked on many different strategies to help the planet. An example of one is the act of segregating their plastic bottles from general waste ensuring it is recycled, but in most situations, aiming to replace the plastic with cans and disposable, plant-based items.

They also have worked on sustainable transport by taking 63,000 people by shuttles to the grand prix and using EV buses to reduce carbon emissions.

Another standout initiative came from Cranfield Aerospace Solutions to create zero emissions as they use hydrogen as the fuel to power their engines. Hydrogen’s only waste product is water, so there is no carbon emissions and therefore no damage to the environment.

This is an effective solution to reducing climate change as there is 30 times more energy density than batteries, ensuring the system is still efficient in producing enough energy.

The last sustainability action we found interesting was from Farrington Oils, who are carbon and plastic neutral. They fund the removal of the same amount of plastic from the environment as they use in their packaging, which ensures that all the consequences of using this type of packaging are outweighed by their strategies to help the environment.

They also support reforestation initiatives and recycle plastic all around the world, which is helping them become more sustainable.

Sustainability strategies See Limited can adopt

See Limited is already well adapted to sustainable production as it is an important part of our ethos. We have taken numerous steps to reduce their carbon footprint and encourage sustainable practices across the operating business. We have installed 316 solar photovoltaic panels at their operational site in Corby which saves 32 tonnes of carbon emissions a year and has switched all company owned vehicles to electric.

See Limited can use our learnings to enhance our sustainable initiatives such as adopting the scheme made by Farrington Oils. We could remove the same amount of plastic from the environment that is used in production as this would minimise the effects of using plastic by helping the planet, saving ecosystems and wildlife.
